The Battle of Gettysburg took place over the course of 3 days from July 1st to July 3rd in the year 1863. This is the only Battle that was fought in the North. This battle was fought from July 1st to July 3rd, 1863. It is estimated that there were over 50,000 casualties in the two armies fighting. Around 28,000 (4,500 killed) being from the Confederate Army and around 23,000 (3,100 killed) being from the Union Army. It was the bloodiest battle of the entire Civil War with the most deaths and casualties. Many historians believe that if this battle was won by the Confederates, they may have been able to go on to win the war. However, as it played out, the Confederates won the 1st day, but the second day was a stalemate with neither side really winning. However, the Union had control of the high ground, and on the 3rd day of fighting the Union clearly wins. Pickett’s Charge was a total disaster for the Confederates, and the night of July 3rd they began their retreat.
